A luxurious Black Velvet Cake with a rich, velvety texture and unique dark hue, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons black cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black food coloring (gel or paste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch cake pans by greasing and lining them with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, black cocoa powder, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until fluffy and pale, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Pour in the buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and white vinegar. Mix gently until the batter is smooth.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  7. Add black food coloring to the batter to achieve your desired velvety darkness.
  8. Divide the batter into the prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Notes

Avoid overbaking to prevent dryness. Use parchment paper in the cake pans for easy release.
