Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour A staple ingredient that provides the wonderful structure of the cake.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Sweetness to balance the richness of the custard and ganache.
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder The key to achieving that elevating fluffiness.
  • 0.25 tsp salt Just a pinch adds depth to the flavors.
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, softened For creaminess and a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
  • 3 large eggs Binding everything together, yielding a moist cake.
  • 0.5 cup whole milk Infuses the cake with added richness.
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract A necessary note of warmth and familiarity.

For the Custard and Ganache

  • 2 cups whole milk (for custard) Creamy and smooth, it becomes the heart of the pie.
  • 0.25 cup cornstarch Thickens the custard to that perfect, velvety texture.
  • 1 cup high-quality chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar Essential for a rich, decadent ganache.
  • 1 cup heavy cream To achieve that luxurious, silky ganache finish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease two 9-inch cake pans.
  • In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, beat the softened butter until fluffy, then add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
  • Combine the wet and dry ingredients, stirring gently until just mixed, then divide the batter evenly into the prepared pans.

Baking

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Custard and Ganache Preparation

  • While the cake is cooling, prepare the custard by whisking together milk, cornstarch, sugar, and egg yolks in a saucepan over medium heat until thickened.
  • Stir in vanilla and let cool to room temperature.
  • For the ganache, heat heavy cream until it simmers and pour it over the chopped chocolate, stirring until smooth.

Assembly

  • Layer the sweet custard between the cooled cake layers and top with ganache.
  • Let it drip over the sides.

Serving

  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Avoid overbaking and ensure to whisk the custard continuously for a smooth texture. Layering can get messy; a baking sheet underneath will catch any ganache spills.
