Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 small cabbage, finely shredded for that crispy texture
  • 1.5 lbs lean ground beef or turkey filling and protein-rich
  • 1 large onion, chopped adds sweetness and aroma
  • 0.5 cup chopped red bell pepper for color and sweetness
  • 1 15-ounce can diced tomatoes, undrained for a juicy punch
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt enhancing flavors
  • 0.5 teaspoon pepper seasoning to perfection
  • 0.5 teaspoon sugar balancing the acidity
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds offering a unique flavor profile
  • 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce for creaminess
  • 1 cup reduced-fat sour cream providing a luscious texture
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese for the melty topping

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a deep 13 x 9 baking dish.
  • Spread the shredded cabbage evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  • In a large skillet, brown and crumble the ground beef or turkey, along with the chopped onion and red bell pepper. Drain excess fat and return the mixture to the skillet.
  • Add the can of diced tomatoes (do not drain), salt, pepper, sugar, and caraway seeds to the beef mixture. Stir until well mixed and carefully spread this mixture over the layer of cabbage.

Baking

  • Combine the tomato sauce and sour cream in a small bowl, mixing thoroughly until smooth, and spread this sauce over the beef mixture.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
  • After 1 hour, uncover the dish and sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese evenly on top. Return it to the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

Consider sautéing minced garlic along with the onions for added flavor. Feel free to add chopped carrots or zucchini for extra nutrition, or substitute ground beef for ground turkey. Store leftovers tightly covered; can be frozen for later use.
