Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir until the yeast dissolves and let sit for 5 minutes, or until bubbly.
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir until combined and knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle (about 16×12 inches).
  • Spread the melted butter over the rolled-out dough, then sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon evenly on top.
  • Starting from one edge, roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into 12 even pieces.
  • Place the cinnamon rolls into the prepared baking dish, ensuring they are close together.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Icing

  • While the rolls are baking, prepare the cream cheese icing by beating together cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth and creamy.
  • Once the cinnamon rolls are baked and slightly cooled, spread the cream cheese icing generously on top.

Notes

To enhance flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg with the cinnamon. For texture, consider adding chopped nuts or raisins. Ensure ingredients are at optimal temperature for the yeast activation.
