Preparation

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Gently add the pasta shells and cook according to package directions until al dente, typically around 10 to 12 minutes. Drain and set aside to cool slightly.
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain any excess fat and stir in minced garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • In a large bowl, combine ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, and egg. Add the cooled beef mixture and stir until well combined.
  • Stuff each pasta shell with the ricotta and beef mixture. Arrange stuffed shells in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Pour marinara sauce over the stuffed shells, ensuring each is fully covered. If desired, sprinkle remaining mozzarella or Parmesan on top.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly. Broil for additional 2 to 3 minutes for a golden top.
  • Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.

Notes

Consider adding sautéed spinach or mushrooms for extra nutrition. You can also experiment with different cheeses. Prepare ahead of time by refrigerating but add extra baking time.
