- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp salt
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg (optional, for depth)
- Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish optional
Instructions
Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until it begins to shimmer.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté for about one minute until fragrant. Pour in the heavy cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg if using. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and all the Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth. Remove from heat.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes into the prepared baking dish and drizzle half of the creamy cheese sauce over the first layer.
- Repeat with the remaining slices of potatoes and sauce, ensuring the top layer is generously covered.
- Sprinkle the last 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top.
Baking
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
- Let it rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For an improved flavor, consider adding cooked bacon bits or using different types of cheese. A mandoline slicer can be used for even potato slices. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days.
