For the Frosting

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Mixing the Batter

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, white vinegar, and vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture, stirring gently until just combined.

Baking

  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cooling and Frosting

  • Cool the cakes in their pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Prepare the frosting by beating the cream cheese and butter until silky smooth.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar and a splash of vanilla extract until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate and frost the top generously with cream cheese frosting.
  • Add the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Notes

Ensure butter and eggs are at room temperature before mixing. Avoid over-mixing the batter. Cool completely before frosting.
