  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil For a tender crumb
  • 3 large eggs The backbone that binds all together
  • 1 cup water For mixing the cake
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For aromatic flavoring

For the cream layers

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream For airy fluffiness
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar To sweeten the whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For flavor
  • 1 1/2 cups softened cream cheese For creaminess
  • 1/4 cup sugar For sweetening the cream cheese mixture
  • 1/2 cup sour cream To add tanginess
  • 1/4 cup milk To smooth the cream cheese mixture

For garnishing

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips For topping
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries or strawberries For color and flavor

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine the red velvet cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, water, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Once the cake has cooled, cut it into 1-inch cubes.

Cream Mixture

  • In a large bowl, beat together the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  • In another bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, sugar, sour cream, and milk until smooth.
  • Carefully fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until fully combined.

Assembly

  • In a large trifle dish or individual serving glasses, layer the red velvet cake cubes followed by the cream cheese mixture.
  • Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cream cheese mixture on top.
  • Garnish with chocolate chips and fresh berries.
  • Refrigerate for 2-4 hours, or ideally overnight, to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

Common mistakes include overmixing the cake batter, not allowing the cake to cool before cutting, and rushing the refrigeration process. Consider using Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a protein-rich twist or replacing half of the heavy cream with coconut cream for a lighter version.
