Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), filling your kitchen with a sense of anticipation.
  • In a spacious bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Crack the egg into the buttery blend, then pour in the molasses and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, blending until a soft, dough-like consistency forms.
  • Divide the dough into two halves, wrap each in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.

Baking and Decorating

  • Once firm, roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  • Use cookie cutters to create shapes for your winter village.
  • Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown, then let cool completely on a wire rack.
  • For the royal icing, beat the egg whites until frothy, then gradually add powdered sugar and lemon juice until stiff peaks form.
  • Transfer the icing to piping bags for decoration, optionally adding food coloring.
  • Let the icing harden for 1-2 hours before showcasing your creations.

Notes

Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. Be generous with flour when rolling out the dough to prevent sticking. Don’t rush the chilling process.
