Ingredients

For the Patty Melt

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend) Perfectly balanced for flavor and juiciness.
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced Sweet and savory, elevates the sandwich.
  • 8 slices American cheese Creamy and melty, backbone of every great patty melt.
  • 8 slices Texas toast Generously thick, adds texture and heartiness.
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter For golden, buttery toastiness.
  • to taste salt and pepper Simple seasoning to enhance the flavors.
  • 4 tbsp creamy pepper sauce Adds a zesty kick to the patty melt.

For the Creamy Pepper Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise Creamy base that brings everything together.
  • 2 tbsp ketchup A touch of sweetness to balance the flavors.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Adds depth and a unique tang.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder For that aromatic kick.
  • 1 tsp onion powder Enhances the overall flavor profile.
  • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper Provides that essential peppery punch.

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions

  • Heat a skillet over low heat and add the thinly sliced onions with a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and soft, about 20 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Form and Cook Patties

  • Shape the ground beef into four oval patties, slightly larger than the bread. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  • In the same skillet, increase heat to medium-high and cook patties for about 4 minutes per side until desired doneness. Remove and let them rest.

Prepare Creamy Pepper Sauce

  • In a mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.

Assemble and Toast

  • Butter one side of each slice of Texas toast. On the unbuttered side, spread a layer of the creamy pepper sauce, add a slice of cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and then cover with another piece of Texas toast, buttered side out.
  • Return the sandwich to the skillet on medium heat and toast until golden brown, ensuring the cheese melts.

Serve

  • Remove from skillet and cut the patty melt in half. Serve hot with sides like crispy fries or a fresh salad.

Notes

For added flavor, try different cheese varieties like cheddar or Swiss. Add smoked paprika or chili powder for an unexpected kick. Briefly toasting the Texas toast before assembling can give a satisfying crunch.
