Ultimate Patty Melt with Secret Sauce
A mouthwatering combination of juicy beef patties, sweet caramelized onions, and melty Swiss cheese, all sandwiched between two slices of perfectly crisped rye bread.
Ingredients
For the Patty Melt
- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter Divided
- 4 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
For the Secret Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Preparation of Onions
- Heat one tablespoon of butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden and caramelized, about 12-15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
Cook the Beef Patties
- Shape the ground beef into two large patties and season both sides with salt and pepper.
- In a separate skillet or on a grill over medium-high heat, cook the patties for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until preferred doneness.
Prepare the Sauce
- In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir until blended.
Assemble and Grill
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place buttered-side down in a skillet over medium heat.
- Spread the secret sauce on the unbuttered side of each slice. Lay a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by the cooked beef patty, a scoop of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese before topping with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
- Grill the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden-brown and the cheese melts.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
To elevate your patty melt, consider slowly caramelizing the onions for a sweeter flavor. You can also use a digital thermometer for perfect doneness.
