Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar together until creamy and fluffy.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract and continue to beat until smooth.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies and place them onto the prepared baking sheet.

Baking

  • Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Remove from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.

Royal Icing

  • Beat the egg whites or meringue powder in a mixing bowl with powdered sugar and lemon juice until stiff peaks form.
